    I absolutely adore this list over at The Museum of the Future.

    “A museum is,

    • A flex work spot with Wi-Fi and good coffee.
    • The perfect spot to finally read James Joyce or any other challenging book.
    • A place to go on a first date.
    • A place to propose to your future spouse.
    • A place to organise your wedding.
    • Somewhere to dump your kids when you go shopping.
    • Somewhere to dump your husband/boyfriend when you go shopping (and need some time to decide on the right dress).
    • One of the schools in your life-long-learning ambition.
    • Somewhere to celebrate your birthday.

    • Somewhere to kill the time between meetings when in a different city.
    • A venue to host a conference or debate.
    • A lunchroom.
    • An alternative to amusement parks.

    As a kid, I’d often ask my parents to take us around museums. I even celebrated my 12th birthday with a museum hop to the planetarium, the tourism office (which had an exhibit of Chinese ceramics), and an old cemetery. Who would’ve thought that these childhood memories would influence my career choices. :)

    Of course, the memories we collected were from adults whose childhoods largely predate the boom in modern architectural additions to museums, and therefore largely consist of traditional museum architecture.  While there were a handful of memories of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum in New York City, only time will tell how how youngsters today remember modern museums and additions.

    Good question.

    As a child, it’s easy to remember the monumental architecture of traditional museum buildings and old government buildings. But how about modern additions like Guggenheim Bilbao, the Denver Art Museum, and the New Museum? Will today’s kids remember this kind of architecture?

    this article on how kids remember museum architecture is really intriguing reminds me of so much of myself. one of the first few museums i visited was the national museum. the entire 3rd grade class went there on a field trip, and i recall the facade of the old senate building, how it was painted white (with a red roof), and looking at this very tall statue of Manuel Quezon while lining up outside.
